Will of John Cottingham (as it was written)
In the Name of God Amen I John Cottingham of Somersett County in the Province of Maryland being very Sick and weak in the Body but of perfect Memory blessed be the Name of the Lord and knowing the uncertainty of this Transitory Life and willing to settle my temporall Estate in the first I give and commit my Soul to God who gave it & my Body to the Earth from whence it came to be buried at the discretion of Executrix hereafter named and when all my Lawfull Debts being paid I give and bequeath as followeth----
Imprimis I give and bequeath to my Wellbeloved Wife and her Heirs forever all my rights and Titles of Land which I hold in the Afsd County & Province
Item It is my Will & Desire that my three children (Viz:) Thomas & John and William should be at Age and goe free at the age of Eighteen Years old if in case my Wife should marry again-----
Item I Nominate and appoint my Wife to be my whole and Sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament as Wittness my hand and Seal this 5 Day of February Seventeen Hundred and twenty threeSigned Sealed & delivered his in presence of us

Came William Whittington & Charles Cottingham Subscribing to the within Will who make Oath upon the Holy Evangelists of Allmighty God that they see the within named John Cottingham the Testator Sign & Seal the within Instrument as his Last Will & Testament & that they heard him Publish & declare the same to be & that at the time of his so doing he was of sound disposing Mind & Memory to the best of their Knowledge Sworn before me the Day & year above Written

On 18 Apr 1725, Mary Cottingham, filed her account of the estate.

John and brother Charles recorded their cattle marks in Somerset in 1698. Jonathan recorded his in 1703 & 1705.

John married Mary Conner, the daughter of Phillip Conner, Sr. before Phillip's death in 1702.

Will of Philip Conner, Senr., of Somerset Co., Province of Maryland, Planter, ...Soul to God...Body to be buried at the discretion of My Executrix.
To Eldest Son Philip Conner 100 acres of land called by the name of Hogbed Point Joining upon ye land of John Outen. To said son Philip in Money Sterling 1 shilling.
To son John Conner, legally begotten of my new Present wife Mary the now dwelling Plantation, whereon I now Live together with all Profits and M______thereunto belonging...., that is to say, after ye decease of my aforesaid wife Mary. Also to my said son John 50 acres of Marsh called by the name of Rumbling Point.
To son William Conner 50 acres of Land adjoining his brother Johns Land together with 50 acres of Marsh lying upon ye aforesaid rumbling front viz these Lands I hereby ...confirm to ye aforesaid John and William their heirs for ever.
To my son in law Walter Taylor 1 Shilling Money Sterling further I give unto my Daughter Eliner forermly ye wife of Jeffrey Mitchell {should be Minshull} deceased 1 shilling Money Sterling
To dear and beloved wife one feather bed whereon I generally lie.
To daughter Mary the Now wife of John Cottingham one Cow with a Cow Calf Commonly called and known by ye Name of Pea.
And as for the rest of my Moveables within doors and without vizt Cattle Hogs Sheep horse or any other Creatures to me properly belonging I do hereby order to be equally divided due proportion amongst my wife and her five children vizt: John William Elizabeth Mary and Anne
Lastly I constitute and appoint my afsd Loveing Wife Mary to be my sole Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament revoking all former wills
