ANNE IVY
anneivy@home.com
Well, the first Cottingham (actually, there are only two direct progenitors named Cottingham) is William Madison Cottingham, born 28 Feb 1851 in Polk, Iowa, or such is our fond belief, anyway. He married Martha Isabel Vickroy on 18 Jan 1875, and died 4 Jul 1935 in Chariton, Iowa.
Now, his daughter Minnie Ann was my great-grandmother, who I knew as Mamie. She wound up married to a doctor ("Doc", aka Louis Graves) in Atwood, KS, which is where we went for our summer vacations until her death when I was 16. So far as we are concerned, those are the only Cottinghams we know about. We have it written that William Madison's father was John T. Cottingham, and his mother Sarah something, I can't quite make out what. I see that Mamie had a brother and three sisters, but we've never heard about them, when they died or anything
Anyone here familiar with any of these folks, and perhaps able to fill in details for us? We'd appreciate it!

IAN JOHNSON
i_d_johnson@hotmail.com        Northampton, England
I live in Northampton, England and joined the COTTINGHAM list because my great great grandmother was called Harriet COTTINGHAM. She was born about 1836 in Wood Newton, Northamptonshire and her father was a travelling hawker, Harriett's siblings being born in Nottingham, Norfolk, Essex and Northampton and her mother, Elizabeth (Betsy), Lincoln. The family finally settled in Northampton and became confectioners, probably after the eldest son entered that business in Birmingham (possibly working for Cadburys). I would love to find William & Betsy's marriage. The birthplace of William (Harriett's father) varies according to different censuses but as far a I can tell he was born illegitemately in Southwick, Northamptonshire in the early 1800s to Mary COTTINGHAM who was also born illegitemately in Southwick about 1786 to Elizabeth COTTINGHAM. Cottingham is a parish in Northamptonshire not far from Southwick and Wood Newton so I presume my branch originated from there. I would like to hear from anyone with connection to Northamptonshire COTTINGHAMs and also Lincolnshire and Warwickshire ones.

RICHARD IAN COTTINGHAM
northwd@northcom.net       Ontario Canada
I live with my wife on a small lake in central Ontario -- cottage country. More and more, it seems that people are retiring to their cottages after their working years are over. We live on Mink Lake, 10 km from Lake St. Peter, where we get our mail. The latter is some 45 minutes north of Bancroft. My parents were Frederick Albert Cottingham and Mary Adelaide Netterfield. My father's parents were Thomas Cottingham and Grace Shortt of Doe Lake, Ontario. Thoma's parents were John Cottingham and Ann Mason. John's parents were John Cottingham and ------ nee Bolton. I have a lot of material collected over the years that needs to be entered into a useable family tree. I plan to get a start on that very shortly. It would appear that my ancestors came to Canada directly from England.

I am descended through George?, Thomas, Jonathan, Elisha. Elisha's daughter, Nancy was my gggg-grandmother. She married Reuben West in Sussex Co. DE. Most all of my family still live in the Sussex Co. DE / Worcester Co.MD/Somerset Co. MD areas. I live in NC right now while my husband works on his residency in Family Medicine but then we are drawn back to the salty air of the eastern shore. I guess it is in our blood.

WILLIAM KINSEY KOERBER
wkoerber@earthlink.net       Washington, DC
My Cottingham ancestry has lived around Hamilton

Shore with a short stopover in Nicholas County, Kentucky. My direct line is

  Patti Ione Pickett (b. 1931) + Leonard George Koerber (b. 1933)

  Thomas Cottingham (1732-1826) + ?
  Jonathan Cottingham (1683-1762) + Margaret Cox (1685-1769)
  Thomas Cottingham + Mary Dixon

RONALD BULLOCK
RBul1865@aol.com       Cardiff, CA
My last ancestor named Cottingham was Charlotte Cottingham (1780-1844), daughter of Charles Cottingham. My Cottinghamlineage down to my grandparents is as follows:

Thomas Cottingham (1636-1683) and Mary Dixon
Jonathan Cottingham (1683-1762) and Margaret Cox
Jonathan Cottingham-II (1712-ca.1800) and Lydia Turbet
Charles Cottingham (1748-1817) and Nancy Ann Conner
Charlotte Cottingham (1780-1844) and William Bridges
John Bridges (1807-1895) and Elizabeth Hargrove
Emaline Charlotte Bridges (1841-1922) and T. J. Clingan
Levia Clingan (1869-1960) and John C. Bullock

A sister of William Bridges (Sarah/Sally) married Jonathan Cottingham, brother of William's wife Charlotte, so the Bridges and Cottingham children were double first cousins. John Bridges and several of his brothers moved from Marlboro Co, SC, to Clark Co, AR, in 1857.
My main focus of research on my Cottingham line at present is to identify the parents of Nancy Ann Conner, wife of Charles Cottingham. I believe that she was the daughter of Thomas Conner (1727-1802) and Ann Beverly (1731-1791), but positive proof of this has been elusive

ROBERT GREEN
RGreen8533@aol.com
I descend from the Cottingham line through my mother, Dorothy Cottengaim. I am new to this wonderfully informative site, and relatively new to genealogy. My family belongs to one of those lines in which the spelling of Cottingham was changed during the early nineteenth century while on the frontier of Kentucky.

My ancestors:
George Cottingham (1615-1645)-most probably the father of Thomas. [As there were only about 8,000 Europeans in North America when George arrived, and about 12,000 - 15,000 by 1640, when Thomas was born, and Cottingham was an unusual name, the circumstancial evidence is strong]
  Thomas Cottingham (1640-1688) + Mary Dixon (c. 1648-c.1686)
  Jonathan Cottingham I (1683-c1762) + Mary Cox (1685-1769)
Jonathan Cottingham II (c1710-c1775) + Lydia Turbet (1720-1805)
  Dill Cottingham (1756-c1805) + Juliana Pierce (1764-?)
William Cottingham (1792-1862)+ Margaret Nelson (c1789-1894)- It was during this generation that the name spelling was changed. Wm has Cottingham on his tombstone in Laurel County, Ky; Margaret has Cottengaim on her tombstone in Sullivan County, In; the Kentucky censuses from 1810 - 1850 have a host spellings, from Cottengim, Cottingin, Cottengame, etc, from which many different lines evolved.
Daniel Cottengaim (1855-1940) + Mary Jennie Hilderbrand (1862-1895)
  William M. Cottengaim (1891-1945) + Ethel Pruitt(1903-1983)
  Robert Green (1916-1979) + Dorothy Cottengaim (1923-)
  Robert Green (1940-) + Joyce Nordstrand (1943-)
  Thomas Cottingham (1640-1688) + Mary Dixon (c. 1648-c.1686)
  Thomas Cottingham (1640-1688) + Mary Dixon (c. 1648-c.1686)

I am currently interested in learning how & when Margaret Cottengaim moved from Laurel County, KY, to Sullivan County, IN. Also more specifics about Dill & Juliana Cottingham, as well as, the lives of Jonathan I & Jonathan II.

I'd sure like to find anyone who has info on the Kansas City Cottinghams. They were more than likely boring as hell, but I have a newspaper clipping
from 1904 which states that a Cottingham relation was "One of The Richest Men in Kansas City"!! Hey, show me the money!
