BOB SCHULZ
Schulzb@CottinghamGenealogy.com      Havre de Grace, MD.
I guess I can start with telling you what my ancestry is. My mother's maiden name was Roberta Grace Cottingham (1938-1971)  born in South Charleston WV. Her father was Robert John Cottingham (1897-1964) son of Charles John Cottingham (1856-1935), and Helen M. Massey (1860-1932), all of whom were born in Noblesville, IN. Charles's parents were Elijah Cottingham (1814-1882) and Elizabeth Osenbach (1823-1877). Elijah Cottingham was the son of Joshua Cottingham (1791-1874) and Elizabeth Cowan (1793-1877). Joshua Cottingham was born in Worchester Co., MD, then he moved to Kent Co., DE., then on to Noblesville, IN. in 1823. Joshua's parents were Elijah Cottingham (1762-1824) and Mary Laws, Elijahs first wife. Elijah was born in Worcester, MD, then moved to Kent Co., DE. in 1795. He died in Connersville, IN, I'm assuming while en route to Noblesville with his son's family. This Elijah Cottingham had two other brothers John and Thomas, who moved to Kentucky in 1815/16.

John died somewhere on the Ohio River on his way to Kentucky. On 24 June 1814, John mortgaged his land "Cumberland", "Laws Last Chance" and "Chance" to the Farmers Bank of Somerset and Worcester Counties. John was a Methodist preacher and the Methodist church was interested in having Methodism taken to the new colonies in Kentucky. John and his brother Thomas and their families moved to Nicholas County Kentucky in 1815/16. As they were descending the Ohio River on flat boats, John drowned in the Ohio in 1816. The rest of the party continued on and settled just across the Bourbon County line, near Millersburg.

Thomas and Rhoda moved with their family to Nicholas County, Kentucky and Rhoda died there. Their children were James, Elijah (b.1800), Isaac, Joshua T. (b.1808), Purnell, Sarah (m. William Ridgway), and Harriet (m. Henry Scearce). Thomas Cottingham remarried and moved up in to Indiana and cleared an 80 acre farm in Rush County where he lived until nearly ninety years of age. He then started for Iowa with his two sons by his second marriage, William and John, but died either on the way or very soon after getting there.

Elijah, Thomas, and John's father was Thomas Cottingham (1732-1826). Thomas was born in Somerset Co. and died in Worcester, MD. Now I can trace my roots back to Thomas using obituaries, death certificates, birth certificates, and wills. From there on I would love to get better proof. But what I believe is that Thomas's (1732) father was Thomas Cottingham (1705-1791?) son of John Cottingham (1668-1723) and Mary Conner.   John Cottingham's parents were Thomas Cottingham and Mary Dixon, then George "The Immigrant" Cottingham being this Thomas's supposed father.

Thanks for showing your interest and remember to post to Cottingham-L@rootsweb.com, so we can all share the knowledge. Feel free to invite anyone to join the list. Any questions can be sent to my preferred Email address. Schulzb@CottinghamGenealogy.com and please make suggestions to better the list.

RONALD G. COTTINGHAM
cottingr@pa.net
I am the son of William Maurice Cottingham (1901-1977) and Catherine K. Lutz (1904-1968). My father was born in New York City and my mother was born in Hershey, Pennsylvania. His father Maurice White Cottingham (1874-1945) was born in Easton, Pennsylvania, his wife Mary Boyd (-1905) was born in Dublin, Ireland. Maurice's father, Alonzo P. Cottingham (1845-1883) was also born in Easton, Pennsylvania, as was his wife, Emily E. Tellier (1847-1918). Alonzo's father, Robert Cottingham (1799-1880) was born in or near Snow Hill, Maryland and his wife, Sophia White (1801-1886) was born in Easton, Pennsylvania. Roberts father was John Cottingham (1754-1829) born and died in Worcester County, Maryland long with his wife, Priscilla Fleming. His father was Daniel Cottingham (1724-1778) who also born and died in Worcester County, as was his wife Anne Cooper. Daniels father was Jonathon Cottingham (1683-1762) born in Annemessex and died in Worcester County. Jonathon's wife was Margaret Cox (1685-1769). His father was Thomas Cottingham (1640-1692/93) born in Accomack County, Virginia and died in Annemessex, Maryland was married to Mary Dixon (1640-1692/93). His father was George 'The Immigrant' Cottingham (1615-1650) born in London, England and died in Accomack County, Virginia.

PAUL HARPER
pharper@mars.ecesc.k12.in.us       Indiana
I was born in Kokomo, Indiana of Howard County in 1956. My mother was Jane Pendergrass. She was also born in Kokomo in 1935. Her father Paul Pendergrass was the son of Oscar Benton Pendergrass and Amanda Jane Cottingham. Amanda was the youngest child of the second marriage of her father John Cottingham. She was born in Tipton County, Indiana where she married O.B. Pendergrass. They lived in Tipton County until 1918 when they moved to Kokomo, thus my grandfather, Paul, was born in 1902 in Tipton County. Amanda was born to John and Sarah "Sally" Sheppard Cottingham in Tipton County. John had married Susan Gullion in Rush County, Indiana and they had three children. Upon the death of Susan he married Sarah Sheppard in Rush County. John was the son of James Cottingham and Mary "Polly" Sadler. John was born near Milroy, in Rush County Indiana on January 14, 1830 and died at Nevada in Tipton County, Indiana in 1899. In information I have received from some of you recently I can give the ancestry of James and the other material is the same as was written by Bob Schulz. James was the son of Thomas and Rhoda Townsend Cottingham and then you can follow it back from the information of the others. I haven't yet found the death of James and where he and the rest of his family are so maybe someone can help.

JOAN SPIKER
jspiker@pop3.friend.ly.net        Talbot Co., MD.
My line branches off from the COTTINGHAMs a lot sooner than anyone else's that I've seen. It goes like this:
George COTTINGHAM (c1615-?) married ?  "probable father of"
Thomas COTTINGHAM (c1640-1688) married Mary DIXON (c1650-1683/86)
Sarah COTTINGHAM (1673-?) married #1 George Hey, #2 Randall Long (1683-1739) After this there are 5 more generations of Longs, then 4 generations of Davises and then me.

LIZ CLAYTON
LMCLAYTON2@aol.com
       Birmingham, Alabama
I am researching Cottinghams that moved to Alabama (more specific, Bibb County) I have a very possible connection to Thomas and Mary Dixon Cottingham, through their son Jonathan (1683) who married Margaret Cox: I have sketchy info on their son: Charles born in 1710 and then an Elisha born in 1760. My immediate connection is to Elisha Cottingham, born 1793, who married Nancy Parker. I have a book "Cottinghams of Bibb County, Alabama", by Anna Blanche Cottingham, which has a number of other sections of this Cottingham family, if I can help someone.

DAYLE COTTINGHAM
anthro@ix20.ix.netcom.com       California
I've been researching the Cottingham surname for 3 years now. I know some of you have been at it forever it must seem. I envy your persistence. I am descended from George as follows: George Cottingham, wife?
Thomas Cottingham, Mary Dixon
Jonathon Cottingham I, Margaret Cox
Thomas Cottingham, wife?
John Cottingham, Margaret Townsend (This is the John Cottingham that drown in the Ohio    river on the way to KY.)
Robert Cottingham, Mary Johnson
James Cottingham, Mary Glascock
Robert Franklin Cottingham, Sara Elizabeth Adams
Everett Franklin Cottingham, Ruth Fay Wilson
Kathleen Elizabeth Cottingham (my mother)
This a short list of my lineage. I have a web site with more information on it if you'd care to take a look. htttp://www.geocities.com/RainForest/1760/geo.html I'm most interested in George, also any relatives who served in the Civil War. Would appreciate copies of anything having to do with either subject. Will be glad to pay for copies. Also, if I can help anyone don't be afraid to ask.

DAVE SADLER
santa@mm.com        Apple Valley, MN
I just joined the group and thought I would introduce myself. My connection to the COTTINGHAM family is through Lucy Barlow SADLER who second married Thomas COTTINGHAM (1768-1848) 1817 in Nicholas County, Kentucky. Lucy and her first husband John SADLER are my ggg-grandparents. Thomas and Lucy moved to Decatur County, Indiana about 1826/1827. Lucy and Thomas had two sons it appears - John(b1820) and William(b1822) Cottingham. These people are half brothers to my gg-grandfather Jesse SADLER and I would like to find out more about them. I believe both are found in the 1850 Iowa census - William is in Polk County and John is in Jefferson County. Would like to find out where they ended up and any family history information associated with them. Thomas' son James SADLER married Mary (Polly) SADLER in Nicholas County in 1823. It is likely that Mary and my SADLER people in Nicholas County are related in some way. If anyone has information on Polly I would like to exchange information. This could give us some more clues on the origins of my SADLER family.

MAVIS JACKSON

Well Hi it seems this has to be a list of cousins. I am Mavis Leviner Jackson. My daddy was James Leviner born 1908 in Scotland Co NC. His mother was Minnie Etta Prevatte born in Marlboro Co SC 1884 her parents were Jim David Prevatte born in SC and Emily Cottingham born in SC. Of course what I need to know is who are the ancestors of Emily Cottingham. I believe her parents can be found in the 1870 census of either Marlboro Co, SC or Richland Co NC. If anyone has any information about Emily Cottingham please let me know.

PAULA GARCIA
ebuckeye@tiptontel.com
      Hamilton Co., IN.
My name is Paula Carter Garcia. I live in Cicero (Hamilton County) IN. My grandmother was Evelyn Marie Cottingham born in Noblesville, IN. Married to Ernest Carter. My great-grandfather was Clarence Elbert Cottingham born in Noblesville who married Mary Ella Caylor. Clarence's father was Calvin (Fletcher of Elbert) Cottingham (married Susan Slagle) who was the son of Purnel Cottingham (married 1st Burnetta Scearce and 2nd Elizabeth Batterson) who was the son of Thomas Cottingham and Rhoda Townsend. Hamilton County IN has a very rich Cottingham history. I'm still trying to figure/sort everyone out. Children of both Thomas Cottingham and his brother Elijah settled in Hamilton County in the 1820/1830's. Of course they all repeated the same names over and over so it is difficult to separate them. I'm looking forward to all the great information we can share and exchange.

PATRICK ANDERSON
PatAnder73@aol.com

Charles Cottingham, born 1775-1780 probably in Worchester or Somerset Co., Maryland; died Aft. 1840 in Henderson County, Kentucky. He arrived before 1796 in Henderson County Ky with only his horse. He married Edith Sellers 1806 in Henderson County, Kentucky. Edith Sellers, born 1786 in Sampson County, North Carolina; died Aft. 1840 in Henderson County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Isham H. Sellers and Unus Vann. Charles may have journeyed with some other members of the Cottingham family that went south to the Carolinas after the American revolution and met his wife's family there and went with them to KY. Charles is likely descended from the family that lived on the Eastern Shore of Chesapeake Bay. To date I have not had the opportunity to make the connection to this early Maryland Cottingham family. Charles may have been in Duplin County NC and Simpson County, Tennessee  http://members.aol.com/patander73/home.html
Children of Charles Cottingham and Edith Sellers are:

i. Susan Cottingham, married Thomas Sutton
ii. Elizabeth Cottingham, married William Rawley.
iii. Isham D. Cottingham, born September 22, 1807 in Kentucky; died June 26, 1883 in Henderson County, Kentucky; married Analiza Rideout September 23, 1829 in Henderson County, KY.
iv. Ephraim Jackson Cottingham, born January 01, 1818 in Henderson County, Kentucky; died September 06, 1861 in Hamilton County, Illinois; married Mary Elder Ashby December 06, 1838 in Henderson County, Kentucky.
v. Eliza Jane Cottingham, born August 11, 1821; died December 07, 1887 in Hamilton County, Illinois; Married Jonathan Ashby May 08, 1842 in Henderson Co, Ky.

JERRY SMITH
jerrys3@earthlink.net      Sacramento, CA
I've only got two known generations of COTTINGHAMS, the eldest being Alfred Bethel COTTINGHAM. He said (in various censuses) that he was born in North Carolina about 1821-23. He married in Montgomery County, IL in 1843 and moved to California in 1854, where he died in 1902. His grand-daughter (my grandmother) told me that he and his wife never talked about their family or their 'old days' like her other grandparents did when she was a child; so very little about them came down the family tree. Searching through the available records hasn't been any help either! I'd always hoped that the middle name "Bethel" would be a key to solving the mystery, but so far it hasn't helped. I've discussed one family 'rumor' that suggested that he might really be a 'STADLER' but took the name of a step-father with Dave Sadler, one of this group, but that hasn't gotten anywhere either--yet. In Montgomery County, IL, Alfred lived fairly near George (born TN about 1802) and William (born about 1807 TN) COTTINGHAM. I've never been able to find any connection between them, however. If anyone I haven't already been in touch with has come across either an Alfred or "Bethel" in connection with COTTINGHAM, I'd be delighted to hear about it.

I'm a descendant of Moses PARKER and in a collateral line to the COTTINGHAMs. You are welcome to post the below message to the list if you think it would help. I'll be working with Jeff MOORE, a PARKER/COTTINGHAM descendant, who is also on this list. "Documenting the descendants (and their migrations across the south) of the twenty-two children of Moses PARKER, b 26 Aug 1744, VA, d 12 Nov 1830, Marlboro Co., SC. A grand daughter, Nancy PARKER, b 3 Feb 1796, Marlboro Co., SC, d. 22 Jul 1873, Bibb Co., AL, married Elisha COTTINGHAM Sr. Nancy was the daughter of John PARKER and Sarah BROWN. Several BROWN, COTTINGHAM and PARKER families moved from Marlboro Co., SC, and adjoining Richmond (now Scotland) Co., NC, to Humphreys Co., TN, and then to Bibb Co., AL. This list was recommended to me by a fellow researcher who is also a member."

SUZY MACHAMER
sjwm@sunline.net

My Cottinghams begin with Charlotte, b abt 1776, the daughter of Charles, abt 1755-1817. She married William Bridges abt 1799. Beyond Charles, I am clueless. There are alot of "suspects" for his parents, but no "proof" to date.
The origin of this family is murky. I have no doubt that Charles and Jonathon, d.1825, were brothers and suspect that Thomas might also have been a brother. Daniel was likely father of Turbet and Daniel, maybe also Dill. One family history, available through LDS, lists the descendancy from Thomas who. m. Mary Dixon in 1666 to Charles as shown in this program's pedigree chart. The work bore no date or author's name. It also referenced no sources. Another, more recent chart gives the following descent from Thomas: Thomas>John m. Mary Conner>John m. Margaret Cox and moved to DE>Daniel m. Lydia Turbet>Turbet. Following this line could explain Daniel, Dill and Turbet, but does not account for William, Charles, Jonathon and Thomas. This DE source is available on the 1996 Ancestral File and World Family Tree, Vol.4. Preliminary research in DE shows a Jonathon Cottingham there in the early 1700's and many of the Dill name. The Turbet name, however, was not found in DE., but in MD.

This Cottingham family is pretty neat. I am getting the feeling every Cottingham in the US is related to the same branch. Below is my line. I am decendent from Thomas and Mary(nee Dixon) Cottingham.  My family eventually migrated to Bibb County, Alabama where Appy Caroline Cottingham married Francis Marion Trucks.

BOB COTTINGHAM
bobnvic@gte.net    Oklahoma

I am a first cousin to Bob Schulz, so I'll only take my lineage back to his. My father is John David Cottingham who's father is Robert John Cottingham, the same grandfather as Bob Schulz. I have a five month old baby, so I haven't had any time to comment on this mailing list, I've been lucky to keep up with just reading it. Besides, Bob Schulz has definitely far surpassed me on the research. I will probably not be involved in the discussions too much, but I will be actively involved in the web site. The discussions so far have been extremely interesting, especially Joan's records on Ambrose. This list certainly has grown fast!

DONNA CAUSEY
doncau1@yahoo.com        Shelby County, Alabama
I am new to the Cottingham list and I'm very excited about being connected with other researchers and possibly family. I live in Calera in Shelby County, Alabama and my mother is Ella Katherine Cottingham. Our line is from Elisha Cottingham line which settled in Bibb County, Alabama around 1817. I believe my Elisha was the son of Charles Cottingham of North Carolina but I still have not been able to actually document this information due to a gap between 1790 and 1817. I believe he stayed in Tennessee those missing years but actual documentation has eluded me. I do have documentation from 1817 to today. In 1817 or before Elisha Cottingham Sr, came to Alabama with his four sons William, Charles, John and Elisha, Jr. (Elisha, Jr. is my line). . John went to southeast Alabama. Charles is found in Bibb County in the 1830's. Elisha, Jr. stayed in Bibb County. William stayed in Bibb County until at least 1835. He disappears after then. William was a well-known Methodist Circuit Minister. When the Cottinghams got here, they immediately established a Methodist church in 1819. This church was called "Cottingham's Church" until around 1840. The name was changed to Wesley Chapel and it was active until about 1990. It is still in there in the woods and is used for singings and homecomings. There is a Cottingham cemetery in the woods which contains the graves of Elisha Jr., his wife Nancy (Parker) Cottingham and their children. John, William, Charles and Elisha Sr. do not have a marked grave in Bibb County.

If anyone can provide me with information on Elisha and Nancy (Parker) Cottingham from 1790 to 1817, I would greatly appreciate. I will be glad to share any information I have.

KAREN JOHNSON-COTTINGHAM TROUVAT
KTrouvat@aol.com     Barbizon, France
I'm Karen Johnson-Cottingham Trouvat, adopted daughter of Lt. Col. Jack Cottingham and his wife, Vivian. I was born in Dallas, TX in 1942. My "first" father, Jack Johnson was killed over Germany in 1943. My mother, Vivian Heinecke Johnson married Jack Cottingham on Christmas Eve 1946 (by his father Minister Monte F. Cottingham). Jack Cottingham was a career Air Force officer and pilot. I married a Frenchman (now deceased) and have lived in Barbizon, France, since 1967. I have a daughter, Chris, who is married and lives in Toulouse, France, and a grandaughter, Anne Louise. Genealogy has been one of my passions for several years, and I have recently begun watching for Cottinghams, so I jumped on the list right away! My grandfather Monte F. Cottingham and his wife Lorena Blankenship came up from Texas as early early settlers of south-central Oklahoma. He was a Baptist minister and teacher, founding the church and school near Bokchito. His wife played the piano for Church services and taught the younger clildren at school.

DANIELLE WILSON
dwilson547@email.msn.com       Ohio
Hi. My name is Danielle Wilson. I live in Ohio. Recently Bob emailed me about the Cottingham mailing list. I'm glad to see that you are all so actively researching your heritage. I can only go back a little ways in my line. I spent the whole afternoon at the library looking for information on William H. Cottongim (born approx...1861) and Mary Downey Cottongim (born approx... 1866) of Clay County Kentucky. I found the 1910 census that listed them and their family at that time. That was all that I found. William and Mary are my great grand parents. They were married June 14, 1880. Their children that I know of are Sallie, William Jr.., Joseph, Gilbert, Martha, Bessie, Bertha, Julia, and Carlisle. Bertha Cottongim Collins (born July 8, 1898) is my mother's mother (grandma to me). My mother said that she vaguely remembers hearing of an Aunt Sophia, but she is not sure about that. My grand mother, Bertha Cottongim, married Daniel Boone Collins. They had 3 children George Washington Collins, Mary Ellen Collins (mom), and Daniel Boone Collins Jr.. If anyone knows how to proceed from here, I'd sure love to be pointed in the right direction. Also, Bob told me that Cottongim use to be Cottingham. Does anyone know how the change came about? Any and all information and advise is welcomed, since I am so new at this.
