Somerset County Vital Records 1600-1720
Sarah Cottingham was born 31 Aug., 1673. She was the daughter of Thomas
and Mary (Dixon) Cottingham.
Her father died in 1688, when she was 15. Some time between that date
and 1696 she married George Hey. On Aug. 13, 1696 George Hey (husband of
Sarah) and Langland Goddard petition the court of Somerset County saying
they have married the daughters of Thomas Cottingham who died intestate,
and want the court to make a division of his personal estate. George and
Sarah had one child - a daughter named Anne Hey. By 1714, Anne married
Dennis Taylor, the son of Hope and Margaret (Dennis) Taylor. George Hey
died between June and August of 1708. In his will, he left his personal
estate and dwelling plantation to his wife, Sarah. At Sarah's death it
was to go to their daughter Anne. Sarah married secondly, Randall Long.
Randall was born 4 Oct. 1683, making him 10 years younger than Sarah. He
was the 7th child of Samuel and Jane (Minshall) Long. Randall and Sarah
had two children - Sarah, born c1717; and Mary, born c1721. Both girls
grew up to marry their first cousins. Sarah married Samuel Long, the son
of her father's brother. Mary married Thomas Cottingham, the son of her
mother's brother. By 1717 Randall's sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth
and Adrian Marshall had died, leaving their 4 children to be raised by
Randall and Sarah Long. Their household was certainly a mixed one - a
step-daughter, 2 daughters, and 4 nephews. Randall Long died by 23 Dec.
1739. In his will he left his wife Sarah most of his estate for her
lifetime and gave his grandson Randall Long property, some livestock, and
a year's schooling "provided he stays with his grandmother Sarah Long
until 21 or her decease." In 1745 Sarah Long, aged 72 gave a deposition
about land owned by her father, Thomas Cottingham. She had died by 1748
when her grandson is taxed as the owner of the land that had been hers
