Descendants of your (our common) ancestor came to have the name
spelled Cottengim, Cottongim, and variants as long ago as 1800. My
anc. crossed Cumberland c.1806. Clay, Knox, Laurel Cos. of KY were
full of them.

I can't believe I happened upon this site. My grandmother was a
Cottingham and had spent her entire life researching her past. Traced
the family back to Ambrose, the naughty Quaker. (Unfortunately, she
used her research findings to gain entry to the Daugh ers of the
Confederacy! I have her tattered certificate from 1910.)Her thread of
the family left Md. for Ky. and Mo. I have newspaper clippings from
1904, letters from 1897, etc. from the Cottinghams in Kansas City.
A.D. Cottingham was my g.g. grandfather s brother, and was, so the
papers said, the "richest man in Kansas City" due to his horse and
mule business. I've got tons of old photos, and a short but sweet
diary that Josephine Cottingham wrote in 1904. If anyone's interested,
send me e-mail. Thanks!

Since retirement, I have become interested in the Cottingham
geneology. I have information accumulated by my grandfather showing my
part of the Cottingham family straight back to Thomas. This is a great
source with lots of info to digest. When I get my family tree in
order, I will share it with you.

I am married to a David Cottingham, son of John Samuel Cottingham
whose father was James Robert Dixon Cottingham. The Cottingham group
which my husband's family descends from are 'United Empire Loyalists'
who settled in the Eastern Townships of Quebec during the American
civil war. They believe the family to be originally from North
Carolina and that Thomas Cottingh m was the earliest and first
Cottingham of record.

Although John Cottingham was born in Dublin in 1786 it is assumed
because of his English surname, that earlier generations came from
Cottingham via Neston on the Wirral in Cheshire. A famous Cottingham
was a goldsmith in Dublin well before my ancestor. It is thought that
John Cottingham married Helen Field and their son also John was born
in Dublin between 1811 and 1819. Both father and son came to England
and settled in Manchester about 1825. Other children were Catherine
Cottingham c1822+ and Margaret. The youngest known son was Edward
Cottingham born in Manchester between 1828 and 1833, Edward was my
G.Great Grandfather of whom I have a photgraph endorsed on the back by
my Grandmother "Edward Cottingham, the greatest grandfather in the
world" John Cottingham senior ran a Marine Store or Furniture brokers
in Manchester whilst Edward found work on the railway. Thhe family
were Roman Catholic. I am currently searching Dublin records for proof
of the birth of John Cottingham.
